Why are there ropes on fingerboards? The first time I saw fingerboards they were hanging like this second picture, not for "monkey bars" just for pull-ups, but yeah, they require different muscles to stabilize them. |

What are the key differences between Mountaineering and Rock Climbing? The nose, not mountaineering in my opinion, but that is only one route, what about the east/west buttresses, maybe the gully past the east buttress would not be rock climbing and maybe more mountaineering. (just trying to be more specific to get a better answer for readers) |

Why go without socks with climbing shoes? I upvoted this answer but wanted to add to this. I climbed in Yosemite for a while and found that no socks helped on edging, but I climbed more cracks than face. Wearing socks was good because it kept the boots from smelling bad. When climbing cracks I wore socks. When I moved away from Yosemite and started doing more face I almost stopped wearing socks (but threw chalk in to help the smell ;-) |

When do I need a permit to go into nature? I guess you are right, don't count on S&R, that is just one of the reasons why I was told to get a wilderness pass in Yosemite. Maybe to search for your remains... |

Are there boots made for a longer 2nd toe? I haven't thought about lacing around the heel. In the past, I have unlaced the bottom 2 holes in my climbing shoes to allow the toe knuckle to pop up through there and that helps. I will try this and see if there is a better fit around the rest of the foot. |

How do I prevent rocks or sand from getting in my boots? the ones pictured here look insulated. There are a plenty that are not. |

How do I prevent rocks or sand from getting in my boots? That was my suggestion, I have them for snowboarding, but I have used them for hiking too. The shorter versions are called spats: bit.ly/Of1IHV |

How important is thermal underwear for skiing? I up voted your answer previously because I agree with you, and that is why I commented on your answer. If the OP was looking for a good answer yours was it I think, if they wanted something to use for the rest of the year when they are not skiing and they could also take skiing then I offer my option, but not ans an answer since I think yours is better. |
