Is digging a “cold hole” really effective when sheltering in a snowed area? We dug a snow cave in scouts when I was 13. It was Rexburg, Idaho, middle of the winter, so we are looking down around -25f (-30c) outside with the windchill way frekn lower. We used the step up but I thought it was for the water drainage. Anyway, it was warm enough to sweat in the cave. Never did a cave without one to compare, but physics cause me to think it is a good idea. |

Can I eat rotten meat and carcass providing enough cooking? It deals with cooking, but I am going to venture that people looking at a cooking site are going to just toss the meat where someone in "The Great Outdoors" will find this information a LOT more useful in a lot more situations. |

Calculating time until sunset I live in a valley and I look at the shadow on the east mountains. When it is at the base it takes about 20-30 minutes for the mountains to be covered. At that point, I have about 15 minutes of "good" twilight that I can still ride at the skatepark with out it being dangerous. |

Calculating time until sunset Winter vs summer and closer/farther from the equator has an impact on the accuracy of this technique (in the summer here it almost seems to hover above the horizon and skim to the right for a while before dipping lower). @berry120 - start with this technique and test it a few times in early then mid summer and then in the fall and winter to see the differences at your latitude. (fall and spring will be similar) |

How important is thermal underwear for skiing? For extreme temperatures you are absolutely right, in fact, this was going to be my answer. In this case the OP only needs to get down to the upper 20s and not going to be too far from a lodge and their main focus is saving money on something they will only use sporadically. |

How important is thermal underwear for skiing? I have only ever used sweat pants. With a nice set of powder pants and regular pants, sweats underneath kept me warm down past -10© when I lived in Vail. This is good enough to keep the "layers" idea at play and also save money on "ski only" equipment. |
