I'm a geek. I'm Wednesday's little sister.

I've sometimes used sweaters or sweatshirts under a waterproof windbreaker. A waterproof shell over something to keep you warm is quite adequate. Ditto for the pants.

Very good point. Lists like that are only useful if they are kept up to date.

@MaskedPlant: I'm a perfect adequate swimmer. I've only gone on guided tours, but after flipping the raft in class III+, swimming was not something I could do in all the froth. Just breathing was a challange, and life jackets save lives.

comment Probability of Being Struck by Lightning
My dad would always take us to a mostly open field so we could enjoy the lightening storm better. Of course, these were the wimpy Oregon lightening storms, not like the serious ones you get in the middle of the continent.

Experienced whitewater rafting guides can take an entire raft full of beginners through class III rapids, with a class IV near the end of the day trip. But, they also know their river, and have other rafts and guides for backup if one gets dumped.

If you fall into the water in rapids, it doesn't matter if you can swim or not. There is too much air to swim (and too much water to breathe). That's what the life jacket is for. (Knowing to keep feet pointed downstrean and breath in the troughs helps too.)
