Avalanche forecast in North America? @BrenCrowell Thanks a lot for this info. Do you also know if you can rent ice axes there? Then I wouldn't have to take my with me on the plane...I think ice axes are a thing you can use a different one, while I would like to rely on my normal snowshes and crampons. |

Avalanche forecast in North America? Thanks, probably you should include wind and temperature differences into your rules of thumb. And as another rule of thumb: If there are only bare rocks and no grass etc, the slope angle is more than about 30-35 degrees. |

Avalanche forecast in North America? @BenCrowell Original, I'm planning to go for a hike to Mount Dana. But it seems to be likely that there is some snow when I'm going there, so I want to climb the mountain with my snow shoes and to be well prepared, I also need an avalanche forecast. |

Where in the Alps is it safe to drink the water without filtering? @gerrit That's true, but it is sometimes difficult to know if the sign is there only for legal reasons. I think in this case it is better to be safe than sorry. |

Is there a definitive list of the tallest mountains in the world that require little or no mountaineering experience? Looking for European High Points is maybe not the smartest choice. The real high points in Europe are not easy to climb, such as Mt. Blank, Elbrus, Mt. Ararat or Monte Rosa. So probably Teide or Mulhacen in Spain are your options. The next European High Point would be Zugspitze in Germany, but Zugspitze is slightly below 3000 meters. there are countless mountains in the alps that are above 3000 meters and easy to mount. |
