comment How did cartographers map out shores before modern times?
The difficulty in measuring east to west isn't due to the lines of longitude converging at the poles, that is easily accounted for and latitude is easy to measure. The problem was because determining longitude was hard because the earth is spinning. It wasn't until the 1730s there were accurate enough clocks to measure longitude reliably.

comment Michigan Upper Peninsula Hiking - Long Trail
@ShemSeger: The nearest "real" mountain range from there (Bighorns) is a good 16 hour drive minimum, and you'd need awhile to sleep, so you'd really be replacing up to 30% of your adventuring with sitting in a car. Doesn't sound like a good exchange when there is plenty of great backcountry adventuring to be done in the Great Lakes region.

If you're already going to the UP, you could cross the sea and head to Isle Royale.

I think this needs to be edited to be more general, else it is too localized.

Why can't the tubes be modified? That would make things 100x easier.

comment Do dog life jackets have the same ratings as humans?
You might want to wait until your dog is fully grown first, because many dogs are buoyant enough they can float all day with no effort. Our golden retriever was born to swim and she's float around on the lake all day, your dog might be the same.

comment What can I do on a honeymoon in New Zealand while five months pregnant?
@mattnz: The deaths on the Tongariro crossing are pretty much always people that went completely unprepared for the alpine environment. It's pretty easy to avoid getting into trouble.

comment What is the most effective way to flee from an alligator?
Cold blooded animals have plenty of stamina to last through a fight to the death; If an alligator/croc can wrestle for hours with a wildebeest to victory, it could definitely handle a measly human.

I know it's not Colorado, but I've always enjoyed the tree skiing in SLC, esp Brighton.
