comment Dealing with rashes between thighs and around the groin
@hippietrail: that is true, however the OP mentioning that his efforts were ruined by going through wet areas, leaving him moist and unable to dry. That is the breeding ground for fungal infections.

comment Bear spray vs. rifles against polar bears?
@DonBranson: statistics do tell the whole story. With a firearm, you have several individual shots where you need to accurately place a round at a rather small, possibly fast moving target, which is no easy feat. With the bear spray, you have 7-10 seconds of continuous spray which means you can see where it's going and home in on your target, which is something even young children are capable of doing. The bear spray is statistically better because it is vastly easier to use successfully.

If you post 'blueprints' of sorts of your specific poles, we may be better able to find places that sell them, or provide solutions to fabricate them yourself. You could cut fiberglass to fabricate new poles with a hacksaw, no problem.

comment Should I be worried about bears when sleeping in a hammock?
I don't want to write this as an answer, but I can't see how a hammock could possibly be any different. It's not like a tent will slow a bear down for more than 5 milliseconds if it wants to see what's in it.

comment What is considered a water source, and why is it recommended to camp so far from them?
Everyone likes camping right by the shore. Invariably, everyone would camp in nearly the same spot, and ultimately trash the place. Dispersing campsites prevents that, to some degree.

@LBell: If someone in my group is lost or dead, then I've got more important things to deal with than not having a stove.
