The bar is a very important factor.

comment What is a good tool for minor trail maintenance while hiking?
I'd think something like amazon.com/Gerber-22-41576-Gator-Machete-Sheath/dp/B000Q9BBZI would work well, but I've never used mine in the wilderness.

comment Are there significant behaviour differences among bear species to adopt different safety rules?
@OlinLathrop: I don't know if that was meant to be sarcastic, but any tree strong enough for you to climb in is going to be far too strong to be pulled out by any bear. Plus grizzly's can climb well enough to come after you in the tree if they want.

comment Is department store merino wool less effective than branded (i.e. SmartWool) merino wool in staying warm and wicking moisture?
Part of the Smart Wool premium is that they pride themselves on sourcing their wool exclusively from New Zealand farmers, whereas Kirkland, being the Costco house brand, likely sources it from anyone willing to sell it for cheap.

comment How can I improve my footwork while rock-climbing?
Those little nubs often will hold your whole weight. It takes a bit of mental effort to commit to it though for awhile, that's for sure.

comment Are 35mm film canisters safe for holding spices?
I think I'd be more concerned about the canisters popping open and spilling all over everything, followed by hungry bears looking for a snack.....

comment How to heal “blown tips” faster after a climb?
@GorrillaMcD: right, its not a muscle/tendon issue, but the principle is the same: you can irreparably destroy your fingers. If you abuse your finger tip skin so bad, it will be replaced with scar tissue, and you'll be unable to feel with your fingertips for the rest of your life. You don't want to do that to yourself.

comment What should I look for in a rope for climbing?
Would I be correct to assume you already have a harness, belay tools, shoes etc? Those you need before a rope. Then, after that: what kind of climbing do you do, or want to do? Sport? Traditional? Ice?

comment Jerky or Freeze-dried food : Is the salt they contain a concern?
What brands did you buy? A quick glance through my stash of Mountain House, Backpackers Panty, and Natural High, most were in the 15-35% range. Only one of them broke 50%, and that was at 54%.

comment How does one steer a two-person kayak?
@JonEricson: hopefully you two never attempt a tandem bicycle with her as stoker. Stoker trying to steer is a recipe for disaster on a tandem bicycle :)
