comment What is the ultimate car camping bed solution — for two people?
I have a rei.com/product/780367/exped-synmat-7-air-pad-with-pump and find it to work great both for backpacking and for car camping.

comment Safe Way to Mark a Carabiner
I would not worry about nail polish disturbing the mechanism if used as pictured, especially on a screw-gate. A nail polish layer will be very thin as long as you don't gob it on all over the place, and snapping the carabiner shut a few times will take care of any bumps in the polish.

Yes, and nail polish will work for that.

comment How to create campfire which will burn overnight?
@DonBranson: I think there was one where he went to Labrador, and the episode was cut short because the producers sent a helicopter crew to pick him up because there was some imminent storm or something, perhaps that's what you're thinking?

I think the primary method employed is the "TV producers and staff keep it going while the camera isn't running" method.

comment Is freeze-dried food healthy?
Let's be clear on something, are you simply talking about food that has undergone freeze-drying, or are you talking about commercial freeze-dried offerings?

comment Can I mix fuels when using the MSR whisperlite international stove?
@OlinLathrop: because your line "If it were OK to use common gasoline in camp stoves", implies that it is not OK, which is inaccurate.

comment How can you make a MSR WhisperLite stove simmer?
The old Whisperlites with the metal valve assemblies were capable of simmering, I don't know why MSR got rid of that ability in the last few years. When I got a stove, I got an optimus nova for the metal pump and simmering abilities.

comment Can I mix fuels when using the MSR whisperlite international stove?
+1 for concerns about additives, -1 for not bothering to see that MSR's website for the stove specifically says it burns unleaded auto fuel. The point of the whisperlite international and similar stoves is that while white gas is better burning, it's not available everywhere in the world, while automotive fuels are available pretty much wherever there are people.

comment What are the key factors when choosing a sleeping bag for backpacking?
Not as far as I know of. Obviously having a bigger pack will mean you can get away with a larger sleeping bag. The required ratio will depend on how much other stuff you have. I imagine the ideal size for everyone is perpetually "smaller than my current sleeping bag".

comment How much heat can a candle lantern provide while winter camping?
To add, that if the 10°/candle was true, it wouldn't take many candles to heat a tent up to nearly room temperature, but it shouldn't be too hard to realize that won't happen.

comment Is it dangerous to sleep in a tent alone in a forest in -20?
Think of every time you've gotten out of bed at night to urinate. Now imagine every time doing that either going in a bottle that you keep in your sleeping bag, or facing the cold and running outside for a few minutes. That is by far the worst aspect of winter camping, in my opinion.
