comment Will a tent provide some protection from bears?
@Tomas: Hardly theoretical. In some places, such as Yellowstone, the bears are so active and dangerous it is expected of all backpackers. The National Park Service in fact recommends not sleeping in the same clothes used to cook, as seen at nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/backcountryhiking.htm

comment Why do people who backpack sleep in tents instead of tarps?
Camp with just a tarp in northern Minnesota or southern Florida and you'll understand.

comment How safe is drinking distilled water?
Surviving on a lifeboat where you somehow managed to bring a bunch of glassware onto it without it breaking? Sunburn and exposure will be your immediate concerns there.

The claims about the caustic behaviors of purified water in this thread are false. Yes, distilled and deionized water can be very corrosive, but it will not 'burn through' stainless steal or many other metals for that matter.

comment Would a scope from an air gun work on a “real” gun?
The scope is unlikely to be fit for a .308, but would probably work for a .22 or similar.

comment Which one is scientifically better for carrying water during an expedition: A hard fiber bottle or an Aluminium Bottle?
There is no such thing as "scientifically better". There are only trade-offs.

comment What's the fastest and easiest way to replace an in-boom outhaul?
I think we'll need some pics or details about the specific boat to have any chance of providing useful information.
