comment How to estimate the depth of a pool of water from a distance above?
@DonBranson, sometimes we need to take calculated risk when we are trapped between a rock and a hard place. Isn't this part and parcel of survival?

I understand that he took some short cuts during filming, but that's besides the point. I am more interested if there is any objective way to get some numbers. Can you elaborate on your first and second point? It is hard to visualize without a diagram. Point 3 can be quite subjective. Point 4, is a good point. I would probably tie a rock to a rope or some vines and lower it down to get the wetted length instead of throwing it down where I want to jump. Sorry, looks like I am asking too much :[

I have accepted berry120's answer because I think the air intake can be somewhat controlled by spacing the wooden pile close enough such that the inner pieces of log do not come into contact with a fresh supply of air to sustain combustion. Thanks for the suggestion of using rocks to store heat :)

Thanks for the informative link. I think this is a plausible solution if the fire is lit on top. The rate of combustion may somewhat be controlled since the air can still be cool below the flames. This is provided that the spacing between the logs is small enough to prevent burning material from falling to the bottom and lighting up the whole pile.

comment How to estimate current speed and direction at sea?
I think using parallax to maintain course is a very brilliant idea! But that can only be done if there are two prominent objects positioned one behind the other along the line of sight. Not sure if there are other solutions, this is useful though.

I didn't know that the visible horizon can be so short if I were to swim in the sea. Yes, this is very useful indeed!

Thanks for showing me an accurate way to calculate distances. But your method is more applicable on land than in sea.. I would need to bring along a calculator and a protractor too. +1 anyway for the effort :)
