Hiking popularity in North America vs. Europe
About density, I would say that the ratio is not the same. The French Alps and nearby mountains have more than enough trails for the locals/frequent hikers, and for the tourists. I would even say they offer way more than Yellowstone while receiving fewer people. If you go to the Mont Blanc, you will meet all the tourists, while the rest is way calmer.
