I'm an avid programmer, enjoy creating things, enjoy a good puzzle and especially enjoy foxing people with a Java puzzle now and again!

Outside of my coding life, I have a number of other interests, including outdoors activities such as hiking / geocaching / letterboxing. I'm also fond of music - I enjoy listening to it as well as playing the piano and violin.

comment Is it illegal to remove rocks from a riverbed in the UK
@Graham Perhaps the purpose isn't greatly on topic, but I'd say the act (of removing them) probably does come as on topic.

comment How to select paracord
@KateGregory That's a whole other question, but the advantage with real paracord is strength and versatility - it's strong enough to use to repair shoelaces and tent lines for instance as well as those uses, if you need smaller thread you can use the inner cores you strip from it, etc.

comment Under which conditions are weather forecasts reliable?
Great question, I'd be interested in a comprehensive answer too if anyone has one!

comment How can I locate lanes where I can legally drive a 4x4 in the UK?
@Greg.Ley It's similar - green laning tends to refer more to disused back country lanes rather than open land, but the concept is relatively similar.

comment Which will drain less body heat: lying on bare earth or bare rock?
After hiking all day on Dartmoor in the heat of the summer, lying on a slab of granite is a fantastic way to cool down!

comment What is the most suitable cooking equipment to use for a long duration in central asia countries?
@Ryley This is very true, I'm not 100% sure of availability either. Then again, while stoves are often only most efficient with certain types, they'll still work to some degree with other types which is arguably better than nothing.

comment How do I remove mildew from a tent?
Great question - you imply you've tried something already and it hasn't worked though. If this is the case, what have you tried?

Thanks, interesting point to note.

comment Is it safe to eat poison ivy berries since I don't react to the leaves?
@LBell It's a fair point, gone now. In terms of "you're never sure", I was referring to the fact that as an individual some poisonous plants / berries can affect you more than others, and (ok, medical tests aside) there's not really a quick way how they'll affect you as an individual. Admittedly not the clearest explanation around, sorry!

This is a good point - though I guess it's better than nothing?

comment Are there any year round beaches with nearby bouldering?
@PatrickScott I'm always up for salvaging questions where they can be sensibly salvaged! The problem with this type of question is it's quite subjective (different people like different beaches) and isn't the sort of question people generally find is a good fit for SE. So yes, as a general rule of thumb like you suggest get as specific as you can get and your question has more chance of staying open. It's true we don't currently have many questions but off topic questions will still get closed - the quality of the site will degrade otherwise, which won't be good long term for anyone.

comment Are there any year round beaches with nearby bouldering?
Perhaps if this question is worked on and made a lot more specific, i.e. focused on the type of beaches and bouldering that you're looking for, it could be salvaged?

Good question - I haven't tried it but my gut feeling is the same as yours, it wouldn't work.

Good insight - better than anything I've found :-)

comment Is it legal to light bonfires on UK beaches?
The code there doesn't specifically mention beaches, just the countryside - does the beach always fall under the "countryside" banner?

Great - can't believe I didn't think about putting it on the inside before!
