Sailing with a child Key to answering this would be context. There are many lakes in Ontario that in July or August I would quite happily take a child along with a lifejacket on and no other specific considerations. Or do you mean an ocean expedition? |

Which are the best trekking shoes out there? While I am newish to this particular SE site, this really feels unanswerable - FAR too many variables and personal feel/fit/use-case/taste to answer. |

What good factual books have you read on an outdoors topic? Unfortunately out of print, so adding as a comment rather than answer - for Canoeing is Bill Mason's "Song of the Paddle" amazon.ca/Song-The-Paddle-Illustrated-Wilderness/dp/155013082X/… if you see one in a used store - buy it! |

Long distance hiking trail markings in North America or parts thereof @gerrit They are common in eastern canada as well, the Bruce Tail for example uses white for main trail, and blue for a side-trail, also using double-blaze for a turn as noted by Don. Likely any maintained trail will use something similar. A specific random-use non-maintained trail (e.g. hunting) perhaps not, |

Long distance hiking trail markings in North America or parts thereof @gerrit the usage of blaze is from "to blaze a trail", as in to be the first |

How much heat can a candle lantern provide while winter camping? @OlinLathrop I was picking up on the original question, asking about show caves. Indeed they can be warmed quite a bit from a single candle or even just radiated body heat. |

How much heat can a candle lantern provide while winter camping? Ahh, but Snow is indeed a much better insulator as the OP wondered in the question. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R-value_(insulation) notes that it is R-1 which would make the numbers quite a bit different. |

What are some effective ways of reducing itching from a mosquito bite? After the first 10,000 bites, you start to develop an immunity... :-) |

Does the solar powered fridge work as advertised whilst hiking? For the cost of a couple of garden pots, you can "build" one yourself to try: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pot-in-pot_refrigerator |
