I'm a physicist modeling air pollution and global warming.
Of course, I spend most of my time programming.

Trail maintenance: what is considered inappropriate when maintaining a trail? This was a wonderful answer. I also want to add that I have had a lot of success just asking a park ranger (say, at Yosemite) if they wanted me to bring some light tools to help clear the trail as I went along. |

What hand and finger exercises help with climbing? I've been climbing for a few years now and there is nothing as helpful as those finger boards. I hate them, but they are really the best way to train. |

What can I do to prevent altitude sickness? Altitude Sickness can be combated in two major ways: (1) acclimatize: take a day or two to get up to your maximum height, and (2) cardio exercise: people who run or bike a lot don't suffer as badly at high altitudes. Good luck! |

What is the true risk of suffocation from different combustion sources in a tent? (CO2, CO) I can not say about tents, but suffocation is a major concern when building an ice cave for winter camping. (The typical solution is to build an air vent with an ice axe.) |

Outdoor activities in San Francisco when it's misty and raining? I live North of the city and I really love the redwoods on foggy mornings. Try getting out to Muir Woods, maybe. OR, if you're feeling really adventurous, drive the hour North and go hit Point Reyes National Seashore. It's beautiful there all the time, and I'm particularly smitten on a foggy morning. |

How do people safely trek in polar bear country? I thought I was adventurous, backpacking in snow and in deserts. But there is no way I'm going backpacking in polar bear country. The answer to your question is "no", it is not safe. I really hope this was a theoretical question. |

Is buying an expensive sleeping bag better? It was only 50 degrees F and you woke up shaking? I think you should expect it to get much colder while camping. In fact, I don't think you should ever expect it to be WARMER than 50 degrees F while camping. |
