I'm a physicist modeling air pollution and global warming.
Of course, I spend most of my time programming.

comment Abandoning a multi pitch climb
@Liam When first learning to multi-pitch climb, it is very important to: climb with more experienced people, read books on the subject, and take a training licensed course (which you can find a places like universities, the Sierra Club, and REI).

comment How to get started skiing?
@nibot Assuming you mean downhill skiing, you need: water proof (Gortex) pants, warm gloves, and a warm coat. Rent your skis, boots, and poles until you know more about skiing. (Wool socks would be a plus.) Strategy: do NOT learn the "pizza and french fries" method, just learn to carve (turn regularly to slow your speed).

comment Do you need to purify all mountain water sources
@Liam I think mountain water is pretty safe. In California, we are careful that there aren't any cattle ranches up stream. But other than that, mountain water is pretty safe for backpackers. (My wife is a doctor and wants me to remind you how easy it is to purify your water anyway.)

comment How do I prevent rocks or sand from getting in my boots?
Interestingly, I don't have this problem and I hike a lot. I wear serious, heavy-duty, thick-soled backpacking books, laced up the ankle. And I wear thick wool socks.

I prefer headlamps a great deal. I need my hands to do things.

comment Are headaches a bad sign at altitude?
Thanks so much. For some reason, I am particularly susceptible to altitude, but none of the people I regularly go tromping around with are. I just want to make sure I'm not being too stupid.

comment Are headaches a bad sign at altitude?
@Ben I always get headaches when I go above 9000 feet elevation. To your points: I slept well the night before, I ran a marathon a month ago so I'm pretty sure it's not "aerobic challenge", and I don't drink coffee. I live at sea level, 9000 feet gets me.

comment Warmth of two sleeping bags
My GF used two sleeping bags in Yosemite this winter, and thought they were over-the-top insanely warm. So, based on that one-time experience, I believe it would be closer to a -10-degree bags.

comment Lowe Alpine - TFX Cerro Torre: pack is moving to sides
Do you know how to adjust all 6 straps on a modern backpack? That also might make for a better question in this format: one that would be more generally useful to a lot of people. Just an idea.
