You may not be a lawyer, but you are definitely awesome. Thanks, man.

Great answer, Timothy. Does this mean that in order for me to carry my 6-inch fixed blade while backpacking, I have to carry it in a visible location? (I can't just throw it in my pack?)

comment What are the repercussions of entering National parks during US Government shutdown?
@Joe We tested out this question this weekend. I believe it is illegal to enter National Park land (but who will stop you). However, it is still legal to enter National Forest land. National Forest have never had gates to lock you out. The campgrounds are all closed, though.

comment Is caffeine helpful or hurtful when backpacking?
I go backpacking with people that are used to drinking coffee every morning. It's never been a problem. But they might get a headache if we skipped it.

comment How can I keep my backpack from resting directly against my back?
@AugR I think a new backpack is the solution. Some have raised mesh grids that separate the pack from your back. Especially newer framed backpacks.

@Vorac Really, you carry wine backpacking? That sounds like great fun. I considered buying a small flask and filling it with something that would also double as antiseptic. But I haven't done it yet. Sounds like fun.

comment How bright a flashlight would I realistically need for searching through terrain?
I just asked all the search-and-rescue people I know and they all said that night searches are rare, because they are dangerous. They also said they don't have standard equipment. Mostly, people just grab some 200-lumen head lamps and hope for the best.

@WedaPashi I am going to guess that anyone who is getting drunk in the wild is car camping, and not backpacking. And, in that case, it doesn't matter how heavy things are.
