@AugR I think a new backpack is the solution. Some have raised mesh grids that separate the pack from your back. Especially newer framed backpacks.

I just asked all the search-and-rescue people I know and they all said that night searches are rare, because they are dangerous. They also said they don't have standard equipment. Mostly, people just grab some 200-lumen head lamps and hope for the best.

@WedaPashi I am going to guess that anyone who is getting drunk in the wild is car camping, and not backpacking. And, in that case, it doesn't matter how heavy things are.
