Product Manager @ Stack Exchange.

I like to cook, and I love my CSA. I write about those things on this little blog.

@Ryley I'm inclined to agree.

Thanks for your answer. This seems to confirm, though, that there isn't really a standard definition, and it might be the case that the only way I know it's "expedition-weight" is if the brand claims it as such. (If both long underwear and coats can be "expedition-weight", there isn't really a clear way to tell if a particular article of clothing qualifies for that description.)

comment How do I prevent rocks or sand from getting in my boots?
@Amine I see lots of people wearing them in the summer. I'd imagine they make your legs a little more warm, but they help keep rocks out of your shoes and help prevent your lefts from getting scratched up if you're walking through brambles or something. If you get some that are made out of breathable nylon, they should be pretty comfortable.

comment Are there beaches on the East Coast (US) where one can camp without a permit?
@RussellSteen I guess anything less than $75...though I'd prefer less than $50 ;)

Anyone else think this might be a candidate for migration to Skeptics?

comment When stranded at sea, should I not ask for a tow?
@mendota Just because it's "potentially useful to canoers, kayakers, and sailors" doesn't mean it's on-topic. It's useful to people who camp to know a lot of recipes so they can make good food with variety, but I wouldn't expect most cooking questions to be on-topic here.

comment What can I do about those obnoxious biting flies?
My uncle and his hiking partner swear that ingesting a capsule of cayenne powder each day keeps all kinds of insects away from them, but I've never seen any scientific evidence that supports that claim.

@xpda Also, once you have a source for that, it makes more sense as an answer than a comment; you are answering the question. :)

@xpda source for "that has since changed"? And is that true everywhere?

comment I found a Deer Tick on my friend and removed it, what should I do now?
Do you have any external sources you could link to that say this is an appropriate course of action? This seems like reasonable advice to me, but it's a little vague and unsubstantiated. What does "oddly shaped rash" mean? To me, all rashes are oddly shaped. Additionally, are there any other symptoms that would be cause for concern other than a rash?

I don't really think that towing a boat is really on-topic for The Great Outdoors. Especially if you're looking at the legal implications of asking for/accepting a tow. Beyond my opinion that the topic is not a good fit, this question is too vague. I suspect that the answer probably varies from country to country. And what do you mean by "claim a huge share"? That the person who did the towing can claim ownership of the boat that they towed?
