During my adult life I have spent more nights outdoors than in.

I have served as an outdoor guide, educator, conservationist, researcher, crew leader and enthusiast from the bear-chomps of Alaska to the rock-falls of canyon country.

Currently working at a remote research station deep in the rain forest of Borneo studying primate ecology.

comment How are sleeping bag temperature ratings determined?
They have a person sleep in it under increasingly cold temperatures until they freeze to death. It is incredibly challenging for the human-resource departments of bag manufacturers.

I think I saw that guy at LAX

I'm staying out of the main discussion (2 months late to the party) but groin and armpit hair likely serve the evolutionary function of providing more surface area for pheromones to hang-out on, and thus have a better chance of catching the nose of passing potential mate.

These rei.com/category/40006518 and rei.com/category/4500525 are really useful on the trail.

comment Cooking by pouring hot water into plastic bags?
Seems the waste of plastic, potential for chemical leaching (heat and plastics), potential for catastrophic failure leaves me wondering the advantage? I've never had a pot that couldn't be cleaned with a little water and elbow grease.

What sorts of activity will you be engaged in? Physical? Sitting around? Dashing from sheltered transport to shelter?

comment How long does mayonnaise last unrefrigerated in the back-country?
So if the data suggests mayo slows the growth (though the 3rd reference I gave suggests it kills Ecoli) even after contamination, then what evidence do you have for saying it will spoil rapidly and people will die? Given the inhibitive properties, seems like one could almost argue mayo is safer than any other fresh food (which also spoils at some point.)

@berry120 - Well, actually, looking at the studies, the risk is fairly non-existent. Or at least (in my reading of it) mayo is no more a game of craps than any other food. There is a stigma that mayo us a ticking time-bomb, but I'm not sure the evidence backs that up.

@Greg.Ley - Well not directly on "backcountry" mayo, but on unrefrigerated mayo. Just posted some citations.

@russell-steen Once is luck. 3 years of packing mayo in the desert and 15+ elsewhere with no issues... well, perhaps I'm just the luckiest mayo-lover on earth ;)

From personal experience, I've carried a squeeze bottle of mayo for a week+ backpacking in the heat of the desert... no issues.

I would agree with the pre-made tuna-salad, for the reason Greg.Ley commented on the question (introducing other contaminants), but I think the USDA is over-cautious...

@Ryley - More trash... more hassle... and with the quantity of mayo I consume, ripping all those little packets open is just annoying.
