During my adult life I have spent more nights outdoors than in.

I have served as an outdoor guide, educator, conservationist, researcher, crew leader and enthusiast from the bear-chomps of Alaska to the rock-falls of canyon country.

Currently working at a remote research station deep in the rain forest of Borneo studying primate ecology.

Hmmm... so it doesn't. Updated.

comment Belly flopping top outs
Form and style are only important if you are alive afterward to brag about it. If someone is going to question your ascent because you belly-flopped, find different climbing partners.

comment Why do we need to pee more than usual out in cold weather?
@stevemarvell I thought it was pretty obvious that's what ppl meant - but thanks for the clarification ;) </cheeky>

Don't start one in the first place? ;)

comment How to estimate the depth of a pool of water from a distance above?
Don't know how many times I've thrown a rock into a pool of unknown depth, watched it disappear and said, "Well it is deeper than that rock..." ;)

comment What are the minimum set of shoes required for hiking outdoors
I know people who have hiked the entire AT in Chaco sandals... Also this statement "require that I wear waterproof shoes" seems odd. Required? By whom?

comment Is emergency overnighting using hammock/canvas tent considered wild camping (Europe/Germany)?
Can't speak to the laws of Germany, but in the US "camping" usually means spending the night in any shelter or not. You could get a fine for sleeping under the stars in a "No-Camping" zone.

comment How to apply duct tapes and mole skin to prevent blisters?
Not sure duct tape provides any "cushion," and mole-skin very little. They work as a friction barrier.

comment Washing dishes with seawater or freshwater?
99% of the dishwashing I have done (and seen done) uses untreated water. Frankly, who's going to filter/pump enough water to wash with? Put a few drops of bleach in your final rinse if you are concerned - but I'll bet the # of harmful water-living organisms that can survive a thorough drying on non-porous dishes is pretty low.

Good point. Added.

comment Comfy inflatable pillows for car camping
+1 for regular pillows. Sit on them in the car - or use them as arm rests. There's always room for pillow.

comment What's the problem with electrolyte imbalance and how do I mitigate it?
It appears that since Gatorade's salt levels are designed to keep you hydrated, they can't prevent you from becoming over-hydrated.

@OlinLathrop I added a few more sources, check out the Runners World bit which seems to say exactly the opposite.

comment What's the problem with electrolyte imbalance and how do I mitigate it?
Well - as you point out, its various nutrients, not just salt (NaCl) that you need... but even then, my point is, steadily eating trail mix, granola bars, (lunch) throughout the day while drinking water is sufficient. Drinking sports drinks while power hiking through the desert (without eating) is often insufficient since they have relatively low sodium and high sugar.

comment Dealing with wildlife in the desert of California/Nevada in general and in the White Mountains in particular
75% of this answer is completely off topic (dealing with hydration and not wildlife) and therefore the balance is "not useful" as it does not pertain to the question -- which is therefore confusing.

comment What's the problem with electrolyte imbalance and how do I mitigate it?
Yes and no... Eating something salty while drinking water is sufficient. Sports beverages are not necessary (and the verdict is out on them anyway -- lots of excess sugar).

comment How should we split up a 3 person tent?
@whatsisname True - but I once met 1/2 a party at 'Island Lake' who were hungry... the other 1/2 were (we determined) 3 miles away at '1,000 Island Lake' -- fat but cold.

comment Should I re-wax downhill skis after using skins?
Interesting... So are the skins removing the wax on the base, or is it leaving stickum behind? I assume the former based on your answer.
