I'm an systems engineer, with some focus on complex systems, signal processing and a bit of control systems. My current job title is "Senior Satellite Systems Engineer". I am also a hobby photographer, and fairly avid programmer. I am the programmer of the Android app Psychic Tester, and my newest app, Ham Finder. I am also the author of the blog, The Making of a Ham, and the photographer on PearsonArtPhoto.com.

When I wrote this question, it was for Tucson in the mountains surrounding it, starting from Tucson elevation and heading up.

comment Does hiking with a dog in bear country increase or decrease your risk of a bear encounter?
@RussellSteen: I'll try and make it clearer, but I'm saying for a short outing, it might help, but for an extended stay, I would not recommend it. I've updated the conclusion to be better.

comment Are there performance differences between lead and lead-free ammunition?
I think this question should either be re-opened or migrated to firearms. As @Shog9 doesn't seem to want to migrate it, I guess the answer is to reopen it...

comment How do you determine how long a hike will take?
This is a good rule of thumb for a good hiker, but not a crazy one. Starting out, you will probably not be this fast.

comment What pattern for casual planes should a castaway create on a desert island?
Oh. The length of the part of the letter to the width of the letter. IE, for the X, you ideally would want something for each line in the X that is 6 feet long, 1 foot wide, roughly. Of course, bigger is better, so...

This type of question doesn't have a right answer, and could lead to a lot of bickering...

@JackBazuzi: Easy visibility. A bit wider is okay, narrower not as well.

comment What precautions should I take to protect myself and my camp from bears?
@Dangeranger: Guess I'm not in quite as dangerous of a bear country. I'll make the appropriate edits.

comment What equipment is recommended when camping with a baby?
There is nothing wrong with posting a question that is on topic here, that is appropriate somewhere else. There is overlap between sites, and nothing really wrong with that.

comment How much water should be carried while hiking in the desert?
@LBell: I have run out before, but never more than a mile from the base area. And such times I've always been well hydrated beforehand.

comment What do I need to look for in good, quality hiking boots?
If you live in a very hot, but dry area, water resistant might not be as required, and might make the shoe too warm.
