What is the main purpose of the foam inside a self-inflating mat? FYI, blowing into the mat is not advisable as the moisture in your breath causes the foam to decay and then the mat is less able to self-inflate. If you need to boost the self-inflation ability, close the valve about an hour before bed and roll the air into the foot of the mat, then reopen the valve. Repeat once again right before you get ready for bed. |

How can you make a MSR WhisperLite stove simmer? @whatsisname, I'm going to have to disagree with you that early whisperlites could simmer. I have a whisperlite from the first vintage. It every time I tried to use it, it has 2 settings: Off, and Hell. |

How should I put out a campfire while away from civilization? Just to touch on "out and cooled down" if you can hold all of the flaming logs and coals in your hands without feeling "ouch", then the fire is safe. If it feels hot, it is not out yet. |

What sleeping bags are needed for a northbound thru-hike of the AT OT to the question, but do you have anywhere (a blog, perhaps) on what all you are doing to plan/train for your AT trip? I've always wanted to attempt it, but literally have no idea how to get started. |

Bear bags vs Bear canisters: which is better? +1 for Fed bear = dead bear. As I understand it, they trap and relocate a problem bear, but the bear is almost always back in the problem area within a week of releasing (and it's usually 200-500 miles away. After the second failed relocation, they shoot the bear. |

What are the vitamin considerations for extended backpacking I've never personally done this, but I hiked with someone a few years back who did. I carried a little extra gear so he would share his sprouts with me. IIRC, he used mung beans in wrapped in a couple layers of bandanna that he kept wet and stored in a sturdy plastic container. |
