Aha, that makes sense!

It seems like the bent shaft paddle would actually be more horizontal on entry whether you reached forward or not... (With action more reminiscent of a paddle wheel.) Unless you were to reach your arm on the grip out and keep your hand on the blade tucked near your body... Maybe I do actually do this exact motion and just don't realize it, or maybe I'm just having trouble visualizing this at the moment.

@MatBanik: not trying to instigate. Apologies to Tomas if it came off as rude.

@Tomas: would you prefer people to be hunting in the great indoors?

@Kevin: Of course I do. But the negative effects of that are well-understood.

Presumably you mean while bivvying, not while actually climbing.

By far the most unique upvote I've ever given.

comment How do I tie a sleeping bag to my backpack?
Thanks everybody for the feedback - I'm now appropriately convinced that hanging this stuff on the outside is surprisingly atypical and that maybe I should give a fair shake to stuffing things inside my pack on my next outing.

That's been my strategy thus far, a jury-rigged compression strap setup.

I think "you're doing it wrong" is a perfectly acceptable answer.

I usually stuff my sleeping bag in a heavy-ply trash bag and then in a stuff sack. So far it's avoided dampness in rain and hanging out in the wet bottom of a canoe. But you've got a fair point.

Also, why the downvote?

I agree, it's probably personal preference - it's just always what I've done from when I got my first hand-me-down external frame pack. I'm open to trying new things, I just wondered if I was missing something obvious.
