When it was -47 'F and the strongest blizzard I ever experienced (total whiteout, visibility perhaps 7- 10 steps), that's when it would have been worth the hassle as those snowflakes were like thousands of needles cutting through the skin - even my Husky couldn't handle that and turned around after few attempts to walk against the blizzard. But, I wanted to confirm that a long beard helps tremendously and replaces the scarf just fine.

While in Montana, there's usually about 3 weeks of below -30F and about 1 week of below -40F, the wind-chill was almost non-existent. In ND, the wind-chill is absolutely brutal. Even in August I often had to wear gloves and 3 layers because of the freezing wind-chill. In winter, it adds around 15-20 degrees all the time and quite often more than 25 'F. The Northern plains are merciless and there's nothing to slow down the wind that will pierce its way through anything.
